“I never lose. I either win or I learn” is a very popular saying among martial artists. I first heard it from a friend of mine who does Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.
It seems like a very universal concept, and I thought maybe I should write a post about it. So, I looked up who first said it so I could attribute the quote correctly.
It was Nelson Mandela! I can’t find the exact date of the quote, but it almost certainly dates back to his political imprisonment.
I’m old enough to remember when he was a political prisoner and we thought he would never be free. Not only was he freed, but he became the president of the country that imprisoned him!
Here’s a powerful strategy to apply this resilient mindset to your own life:
Reflect on a Challenge: Think of a time when adversity struck, whether in your career or personal life. Write down what happened, focusing not just on the loss but the circumstances.
Find the Growth: Ask yourself, What did I take away from this experience? How has it prepared me for future challenges? Focus on how you’ve thrived, despite, or even because of, the adversity.
Reframe the Experience: Instead of labeling it as a failure or setback, rewrite the story of that challenge as part of your growth journey. This is the backstory to your future success.
