Happy National Keto Day! I have been both a plus-sized athlete and I’ve gone through dramatic weight-loss, so I can support you in either endeavor. I don’t encourage my clients to lose weight unless that’s what THEY want. I encourage healthy eating and dynamic movement, and you can do that at a plus size.
I started my most recent martial art comeback at 225 pounds. I didn’t wait to lose the weight, I had the opportunity to train again so I went for it. I had no intention of doing anything drastic to lose weight, I already was eating healthy and exercising A LOT! And I was losing weight at the rate of only four pounds per year. That was OK though, because my plus-sized body was capable of doing things that most average sized bodies can’t do, such as train in multiple martial art styles at the same time. I’m still proud of that, and I will never disrespect my former larger body.
My Nurse Practitioner put me on the Keto Diet because I had become pre-diabetic, despite all my efforts.
He said, “I can’t tell you to clean up your diet, because you already eat healthy. I can’t tell you to exercise more, because you’re already practicing multiple martial art styles. At this point you have only two choices, medication or the Keto Diet.”
I said, “I can’t do Keto because I own and operate an Italian restaurant.”
He said, “I suggest you find a way because Keto is better than meds, and you’ll finally lose all that weight you’ve been wanting to lose.”
And so, I found a way. My restaurant’s Culinary Team was awesome, and they were able to meet my Keto needs. Then we became known as an Italian restaurant that can accommodate special dietary needs.
I’m still on the Keto Diet and I intend to be for the rest of my life. I seem to be a bit insulin resistant and at this point I don’t even like carbs anymore, bread and pasta and sugary sweets don’t even look like food to me.
But that’s my journey not yours. As I said I don’t push the Keto Diet or even weight-loss unless YOU want me to.
