How do you build a strong team without micromanaging? Set them up for success, then get out of their way so they can exceed your expectations.
When my husband and I owned our restaurant, Bella Aquila, our leadership philosophy was “Set people up for success, then get out of their way so they can be awesome.” We gave them encouragement to experiment, including creating a safe place to fail. All the dishes going out to the guests needed to be perfect, of course, but behind the scenes our team was encouraged to play.
With food costs being high, any experiments had to be eaten by the staff. Oh darn, right? Everything I can remember eating was yummy! Maybe not perfect, but yummy!
Leadership is about guiding people through growth, encouraging experimentation, and supporting them when things don’t go perfectly. This philosophy is especially important for people with ADHD, who thrive in environments that allow them to harness creativity, embrace challenges, and learn from mistakes without fear of judgment.
Here are three ways to apply this playful approach to leadership and personal growth:
Embrace progress over perfection – Focus on learning and improving with each step, rather than expecting immediate achievements.
Create a safe space for experimentation – Whether for yourself or your team, allow room for mistakes. This is how innovation happens.
Turn failures into food for growth – Reframe setbacks as valuable lessons that help refine your approach and get you closer to success.
