Two people high in a tree top

Eating Frogs Part 1

September 24, 20242 min read

What if I told you that in just three weeks, you could develop Super Powers?

It’s emotionally grueling, but if you stick with it, you’ll feel like you can do anything—ANYTHING!

This process is called Eating Frogs, and this is the first of four posts explaining it because Eating Frogs is a big concept.

I got this drill from Rory Miller’s book, Training for Sudden Violence (he's pictured with me in this treetop). Don’t let the fact that it’s a self-defense drill scare you off—it’s not about fighting; it’s about enhancing life.

The drill is based on two quotes attributed to Mark Twain:

“Eat a live frog first thing every morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.”

Of course, we’re not eating real frogs.

The idea is this: by definition, a self-defense situation is a fight you didn’t ask for. You were minding your own business when suddenly, someone attacks you. You didn’t want the fight, but you must throw everything into it. So, the idea is that we need to get used to operating effectively in that space of extreme discomfort.

Eating Frogs trains you to do this in your everyday life. Don't just do the task—do it with enthusiasm! Don’t just clean out the fridge, do like you’re on a mission! Make this a habit for all the things you don’t want to do—unless it’s physically or emotionally dangerous. Boundaries are important, even when Eating Frogs. But the more you push yourself, the more you'll feel like you can do ANYTHING!

Eating Frogs can transform your career too, especially for those of us with ADHD. Tackling the toughest, most avoided tasks with enthusiasm clears mental roadblocks and opens the door to professional breakthroughs.

Several of my friends and I have Eaten Frogs like this. None of us have been attacked since, so we can’t confirm that it works for self-defense. What we can say is after three weeks we felt like we had Super Powers, which dramatically improved our lives.
