What if breaking through the wall of procrastination could be fun?

ADHD hyperfocus can be a superpower—when it’s working. But one of the hardest challenges is just getting started. Whether it’s an email you’ve been avoiding or an overflowing task list, breaking inertia is often the toughest hurdle.

That’s where play comes in. Like the kids splashing in a fountain, they just jump in and are fully immersed in the moment. We can harness that same spirit of play to get ourselves moving, especially when tasks feel overwhelming. Here’s a quick, playful strategy you can try today:

The Two-Minute Game

  1. Set a Timer for Two Minutes:
Pick a task you’ve been avoiding (like writing an email), and set a timer for just two minutes. You’re not trying to finish the whole thing—just to start.

  2. Gamify the Process:
Make it playful. For the email, challenge yourself to see how quickly you can draft the subject line, or how creatively you can write the first sentence. Treat it like a game. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s to have fun with it.

  3. Check in After Two Minutes:
When the timer goes off, assess how you feel. If you’re starting to feel engaged, keep going! If not, no worries—you’ve already won by getting started.

  4. Celebrate:
No matter how much you got done, celebrate your progress. Even just starting is a win! Take a moment to give yourself credit, stretch, or grab a treat—whatever feels like a small reward.

How do you add play to your day? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear about the fun, creative ways you make even the most mundane tasks enjoyable.
