🧠 My client told me he was going to push through on the boring task of cleaning up his house — and force himself to do it.
⚡ He has a history of that not working.
That’s neurotypical thinking that’s been forced upon him.
ADHD/AudHD people need to work a little bit differently.
And really, he knows this — he just needed a reminder.
🗣️ “How does pushing through and working harder on a boring task work for you?” I asked.
“Not very well,” he replied honestly, and asked for a suggestion.
🧩 I reminded him that being AudHD, his brain is a bit low dopamine —
and boring tasks lower dopamine even more.
I suggested doing something fun before cleaning his house.
🧹 This brought up childhood criticisms of “being a slacker,” and “work before pleasure.”
✨ “You’re not being a slacker, you’re being strategic,” I said. “If you’re worried about time-blindness, that’s what pomodoro timers are for.”
🎉 It worked — beautifully!
Before cleaning his house, he watched a short 30-minute comedy — long enough to get the dopamine flowing but not so long that he would get lost in it.
🎶 Then, while cleaning up, he put on some fun, upbeat music.
🧪 He’s still experimenting with this technique.
Sometimes it works better for him to watch longer movies and break them into shorter viewings between tasks, like a reverse pomodoro.
