Last night I did a thing! I know y'all are waiting for the announcement that I earned my Nidan (2nd degree black belt) in Okinawan Kenpo, but first, I decided to earn a white belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I was going to wait until after my Nidan test, but after considerable healing with my health issues, I decided that now is the time.
Also, I learn best when I cross pollinate ideas, and up until a year ago I’ve practiced multiple martial art styles at the same time. The other day my Sensei said it was weird that I’m only practicing one martial art style right now, and even a client said the same thing. I thought about that, and realized that doing BJJ now will probably help me in my Nidan test prep.
I am the coach for people with ADHD seeking career advancement. A HUGE number of martial artists have ADHD, and a lot of them haven't figured out how to transfer their awesomeness on the mat into their careers—I can support you in doing that.
And yes, a white belt is earned. The hardest thing you can do in the martial arts is step onto the mat for the first time.
Be brave enough to suck at something new. Black belts need to have a beginner's mind and all that. I have a black belt in karate, and I am darned proud of my new white belt.
