Remember those childhood moments when you were so lost in play that the world around you disappeared?
I’ve been helping my ADHD clients gain control over their hyperfocus by activating Flow State. While the general advice says that getting into Flow often requires tackling a challenging task and receiving real-time feedback, that’s not always necessary. Sometimes, Flow comes from being fully absorbed in the joy of play, where feedback is less about correction and more about experiencing the moment.
This moment at the beach with my son illustrates that idea perfectly. He was lost in his game, imagining the ocean was a ginormous monster and he was fending it off with a stick, his sword. Every time the waves surged, he attacked them until they retreated. He wasn’t a master swordsman by any means—as a martial artist I had to resist correcting his stance because feedback in that moment would’ve pulled him out of his fantasy world. His mastery was in letting go of self-conscious thoughts and being completely absorbed in play.
Want to tap into Flow in your career? Here’s how:
Gamify tasks
If you’re feeling stuck, try turning mundane tasks into a playful challenge. Imagine each completed task brings you closer to a "win," like leveling up in a video game. While gamifying helps break inertia, the real magic happens when you allow yourself to fully engage and immerse in the task.
Celebrate Small Wins
Every little success builds momentum. Each win boosts your confidence and helps you act without overthinking.
Focus on Engagement
Rather than focusing on perfection, dive into the task with the intention of staying engaged. When you immerse yourself, Flow will come naturally.
